Presence & Play in Sand: A Training Network
The Sand Tray Training Institute is happy to announce the addition of sandtray trainers and consultants in different localities throughout the nation to open possibilities for more in-person access. We work closely together as a team, and we collaborate on curriculum, requirements, and ongoing development. Our Institute affiliates with the World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals (WASTP), and we endorse the research-based competencies WASTP has developed to set standards of training for sand therapies for the mental health profession.
We also have reciprocity with The Institute of Playful Healing in Altamonte Springs, Florida. We accept 40% of the core levels of training taken at the Florida Institute, except for Level 7, towards earning a “Certificate of Completion” at the Sand Tray Training Institute of New Mexico. The exception for Level 7 is based on differences between our organizations with number of contact hours and objectives of this specific training.
Consultation Overview
We provide consultations for participants who have completed Levels 1 and 2. The purpose of these consultations is for personal growth and for development of clinical skills. It is not necessary to be working towards certification to request these consultations. For participants working towards certification, a certain number of each category are required as designated below.
Personal Growth Consultations
Trainee creates an individual sandtray that is witnessed by an Approved Provider. The purpose of these sessions is for trainees to develop an experiential base of what it means to be witnessed by a well-trained clinician. This activity also helps to establish self-care as foundational to one’s capacity to be an effective witness to the healing work of others. Number of sessions required for Sandtray Certification: 10
Clinical Sandtray Case Consultations
Trainee presents a clinical case from their own therapy practice to receive input and guidance from an Approved Provider. Number of sessions required for Sandtray Certification: 8 are required (2 of them are associated with video sessions).
